I am a Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind where I lead a team working on generative AI.
Until 2024, I was Statutory Professor (Oxford speak for Chair) in the department of statistics of Oxford University and I am now a visiting professor in the same department. In a remote past, I have held faculty positions at the University of Melbourne, the University of Cambridge, the University of British Columbia and the Institute of Statistical Mathematics in Tokyo.
I was an Institute of Mathematical Statistics Medallion (IMS) Lecturer in 2016, was elected IMS Fellow in 2017 and awarded the Guy Silver Medal from the Royal Statistical Society in 2020. In 2024, I received the Akaike Memorial Award of the Japanese Statistical Society and was the Breiman Lecturer at NeurIPS.
I have worked extensively in the past on Sequential Monte Carlo/Particle methods as well as Markov chain Monte Carlo. While still very interested in these topics, I am currently focusing on generative modeling.
